2020 Pokemon Champions Path Shiny Charizard VMAX #074: The Pandemic-Era Chase Card

If you were trying to buy Pokemon cards in late 2020, you probably remember the Champions Path situation. The set arrived at the height of pandemic-era Pokemon demand, was distributed through a limited number of retail locations, and contained a Shiny Charizard VMAX that would become one of the most talked-about Pokemon cards of the modern era.

The card is remarkable. The VMAX form factor was new. The shiny (black Charizard) variant was visually striking. And Champions Path was notoriously short-printed and difficult to obtain, creating demand that far outpaced supply.

The Champions Path Set

Champions Path was a special set released in September 2020 as a celebration of Pokemon Gyms and Gym Leaders from the Galar region (the setting of Pokemon Sword and Shield). It contained 73 cards plus a 74th Secret Rare, the Shiny Charizard VMAX at #074.

The set was released primarily through specific retail channels (Target, Walmart, GameStop) in a limited number of products: Elite Trainer Boxes and a few other formats. The intended distribution was lower than standard sets, and the pandemic-era explosion in Pokemon collecting meant that whatever stock existed sold out instantly and was not restocked at normal rates.

Opening a Champions Path pack without pulling a Charizard-related card was the common experience. The set had an extremely shallow pull rate for the marquee cards.

Card number 074/073: The slash-notation (074/073) indicates this is a Secret Rare, a card that exists outside the standard set numbering, traditionally indicating premium rarity.

HP and attacks: The card has 330 HP (one of the highest in the era) and the G-Max Wildfire attack, which does 300 damage and also burns the defending Pokemon. Mechanically strong for the 2020 competitive environment.

Supply Scarcity Factors

Champions Path's scarcity was genuine, not manufactured:

1. Smaller print run: The set was designed as a specialty product with more limited distribution than full sets.
2. Timing: Released during peak 2020 Pokemon collecting mania, when normal demand algorithms failed to anticipate actual interest.
3. Retail availability: Limited to specific major retailers, most of which sold out within hours of restocking.
4. No reprint: The set was not reprinted in the way standard sets are when demand exceeds supply.

This created a situation where sealed Champions Path products commanded extraordinary premiums, and the Shiny Charizard VMAX specifically became a market benchmark.

Condition and Values

Values peaked dramatically higher in 2021 (PSA 10 examples sold for over $1,000) and have normalized somewhat as the broader Pokemon market cooled. PSA 10 examples remain the most actively traded tier.

Grading Challenges

The Shiny Charizard VMAX poses specific grading challenges:

Black border sensitivity: The card has a black border that shows whitening and chipping readily, similar to the 1976 Topps baseball card issue. Cards that went through multiple pack-sorting passes at the factory often arrive with edge whitening that prevents high grades.

Centering: Many Champions Path cards exhibit off-centering due to the production equipment's tolerances. PSA grades centering rigorously; a card that looks nice to the naked eye can grade lower than expected under precise measurement.

Surface scratches: The full-art foil surface of the VMAX is susceptible to fine scratches that appear under certain lighting conditions and significantly affect grade.

Packaging: Cards pulled from packs sometimes arrive with minor surface damage from pack contents. Grading directly from a fresh pull gives the best chance at high grades.

The Broader Charizard Market

Charizard is an anomaly in the Pokemon card market. No other Pokemon commands consistent premiums across so many sets, eras, and formats. The original Base Set Charizard remains the benchmark card for the hobby. The Crystal Charizard, the gold star Charizard, various trophy Charizards, and the Champions Path Shiny VMAX all trade at premiums that a Blastoise or Venusaur equivalent would not approach.

For collectors focused on modern cards, the Shiny VMAX is a reasonable entry into the Charizard collecting category without requiring the five-figure prices of Base Set or first edition holos.
