2000 Pokemon Neo Genesis 1st Edition Typhlosion Holo #17: The Johto Era's Top Pull

When Pokemon Gold and Silver launched in 2000, they introduced the Johto region and 100 new Pokemon. The Neo Genesis card set, released in January 2000, was the TCG's introduction to the second generation, and it is one of the most beloved sets in Pokemon card history.

Neo Genesis: The Set

These were followed by the "Shadow-less" and Unlimited printings, but the First Edition stamp is the mark of the initial print run.

The Card

Typhlosion (#17) is a Stage 2 Fire-type Pokemon with 100 HP and two attacks:

Flame Wheel (50 damage): A straightforward fire attack costing one fire and two colorless energy.

Backdraft (20+ damage): For three fire energy, deals 20 damage plus 20 more for each fire energy attached to Typhlosion.

The Backdraft attack has potential for high damage in mono-fire builds. Competitively, Typhlosion was solid in the early Neo Genesis format, particularly as Charizard-era dominance had waned.

The artwork by Naoyo Kimura (credited in the card's copyright line) depicts Typhlosion in a dynamic fire-breathing pose, consistent with the action-oriented art direction of the Neo sets.

Condition Grades and Values

Neo Genesis cards have specific condition challenges. The set's back design is bordered in dark blue/black, which shows edge whitening from handling. The holofoil area is susceptible to fine scratches.

Grading Considerations

Dark border: The Neo Genesis card back has a dark border similar to 1976 Topps baseball cards. Edge whitening is common and graded strictly.

Holo pattern: The Neo Genesis holo pattern is distinctive. The foil should be clean and undamaged. Any scratches in the foil area are highly visible.

First edition stamp: The stamp should be cleanly printed and properly positioned. Factory variances exist, but obvious misregistration affects grade.

Centering: Neo Genesis cards exhibit centering variation. Well-centered examples are more common than in some sets but still worth checking.

The Neo sets were the peak of Wizards of the Coast's creative involvement with the Pokemon TCG before they lost the license.
