The Story

Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) had been producing Star Wars board games and card games for years, but X-Wing Miniatures was something new. Designed by Jay Little, the game used pre-painted miniature ships with a unique maneuvering system based on cardboard templates. Players selected secret maneuvers for their ships using dial selectors, then revealed and executed them simultaneously. The result was a fast, tactical dogfighting game that captured the feel of Star Wars space combat better than any previous game.

The 2012 core set was a starter product: one X-wing (flown by Luke Skywalker or a generic Rebel pilot) versus two TIE fighters (including one for "Night Beast" and generic Imperial pilots). The miniatures were roughly 1/270 scale, pre-painted, and surprisingly detailed for mass-market products.

The game exploded in popularity. FFG released dozens of expansion packs featuring ships from all eras of Star Wars: the Millennium Falcon, Slave I, A-wings, TIE Interceptors, and eventually ships from the prequel trilogy and the sequel trilogy.
