In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt decided that American coinage was ugly. He recruited Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the greatest sculptor in America, to redesign the nation's gold coins. Saint-Gaudens created two new designs: the soaring Liberty for the double eagle ($20) and a Native American chief in full headdress for the eagle ($10). The $10 coin went through multiple design iterations before reaching production, and one of those transitional versions is among the rarest coins in American numismatics: the 1907 Rolled Edge Indian Eagle.

Only about 50 examples are known to exist from an estimated mintage of 500 coins (most of which were melted). Values start around $75,000 for lower-grade examples and exceed $500,000 for coins grading MS65 or above.

The Story

Saint-Gaudens was already gravely ill with cancer when he worked on the $10 design. He created a striking image of Liberty wearing a feathered Native American headdress, a concept that broke radically from the traditional portrait-style Liberty used on previous coins. The reverse featured a standing eagle.

The design went through several versions. The first production run had a distinctive raised edge that was rolled over, giving the coins their name: "Rolled Edge." This edge treatment created problems with stacking in bank vaults, and the Mint quickly switched to a wire-rim edge. Most of the 500 Rolled Edge coins were melted; perhaps 50 survived, many having been distributed to officials and collectors before the decision to melt was made.

The coin is significant for several reasons. It represents the transition from Victorian-era coin design to the artistic renaissance that Roosevelt championed. It's one of the first US coins designed by a major fine artist rather than a Mint engraver. And its extreme rarity (50 known from 500 minted) makes it one of the most important US gold coins.

Saint-Gaudens died on August 3, 1907, just months before his coins entered circulation. He never saw the final production versions of either the eagle or the double eagle.

How to Identify It

Rolled edge: The diagnostic feature. The edge of the coin shows a distinctive rolled-over treatment, as opposed to the wire rim or raised stars found on later versions. Examine the edge carefully with magnification.

No stars on edge: The Rolled Edge variety does not have the stars that appear on the edge of the regular production 1907-1933 Indian Eagles.

Periods in legends: The Rolled Edge variety has periods (dots) between the words in the legends on both sides. The later production coins had the periods removed.

Date position and style: The 1907 date has a specific position and numeral style on the Rolled Edge variety.

Weight and composition: 16.718 grams of .900 fine gold. Genuine examples should weigh precisely correct on a sensitive scale.

Value by Condition

VF-XF (Very Fine to Extremely Fine): $75,000 - $125,000 Moderate to light wear on the high points. Liberty's headdress feathers show wear, and the eagle's breast feathers are softened. Still a clearly identifiable and attractive example.

AU (About Uncirculated): $125,000 - $200,000 Minimal wear on the highest points only. Most original luster present. An attractive coin that barely circulated.

Known Variations

The 1907 Indian Eagle series has three major varieties:

Rolled Edge (Wire Rim): The variety discussed here. ~50 known. The most rare and valuable.

Wire Rim with periods: A transitional variety between the Rolled Edge and the final production design. Also very rare.

Regular production (no periods, wire edge): The standard 1907 Indian Eagle produced for circulation. Mintage of 239,406. Worth $1,000-$5,000 in typical grades.

Do not confuse these varieties. The value difference between a Rolled Edge ($75,000+) and a regular 1907 ($1,000-$5,000) is enormous.

Authentication and Fakes

This coin is routinely counterfeited due to its extreme value. Chinese counterfeits of varying quality exist. Authentication is absolutely mandatory.

Weight and specific gravity: The gold content provides a physical check. Genuine coins have precise weight and specific gravity that base-metal fakes cannot match.
